Birth defects in the heart are of many types. ASD is Atrial Septal Defect. It is a defect between the two atria (Right and Left). This allows mixing up of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood in both the chambers. This result is increased pressure in the right-sided chambers of the heart and pulmonary arteries.

Do all ASD patients require device closure / surgery ?

Moderate to large-sized ASD with increased right heart size and pressure require device Closure or open heart surgery. Small ASD patients will be put on medicines and regular follow-up by Cardiologist.

ASD Device Closure

How is the procedure performed?

This procedure is done in the Cardiac Cath Lab by Interventional Cardiologist. Usually done under local anaesthesia and with Anaesthesiologist’s supervision. A long catheter is inserted into the groin vein. It reaches the heart. The chamber pressures and oxygen content are measured. The size of the ASD is measured. An appropriate device is connected to a special delivery tube and it is deployed at the defect. The procedure is then completed after and a patient is shifted to CCU.
