ICD IMPLANTATION

Implantable Cardioverter – Defibrillation (ICD) is a device that is implanted in the body to perform Cardioversion, Defibrillation, and pacing of the heart when required.

What are the conditions in which ICD is implanted?

First line treatment for patients with high risk of sudden cardiac death due to Ventricular Tachycardia or Ventricular Fibrillation.

Components of ICD

  1. A generator which has a computerized chip, a capacitor, and a battery.
  2. Electrode wire/wires which connect the generator to the right chamber/chambers of the heart.

Types of ICD

  1. Single chamber ICD
  2. Dual chamber ICD
  3. Biventricular ICD

How is ICD implanted?

The procedure is done by the Interventional Cardiologist in Cardiac cath lab under local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia just like permanent pacemaker implantation.
